Energy Lab

Welcome to McMaster’s state-of-the-art Energy Lab

Our ground-breaking lab has the ability to measure caloric burn at a gold-standard level of precision and is the only facility of its kind in Canada and one of only a few in the world to conduct research in children, adolescents, and adults. Here our researchers and affiliated partners are conducting global leading research to understand and improve health.

For more information on the Energy Lab, our researchers, or opportunities to collaborate, contact us.

Explore our Facility

The lab is equipped with two air-tight rooms with measured air inflow that can accommodate study participants’ daily activities (eating, exercising, sleeping).
Participants can spend anywhere from a few minutes up to 24 hours in the “chambers”.
Researchers monitor the levels of respiratory gas exchange by assessing carbon dioxide and oxygen concentrations in the room.
Monitoring of respiratory gases is used to calculate how much fat, carbohydrates and total calories are being burned.
