Health advocates ask city council to protect kids from sugary drinks
The Hamilton Spectator wrote about a recent city council meeting where Sonia Anand (Medicine) teamed up with the Heart and Stroke Foundation in asking councillors to explore local bylaws to protect kids from high-sugar beverages, including pop and energy drinks, and the marketing that makes them so hard to resist.
Reversing type 2 diabetes with calorie restriction and exercising
There was extensive coverage in the media about research by Natalia McInnes (Medicine) and Hertzel Gerstein (Medicine) that is showing success in reversing type 2 diabetes by using intensive medical treatment—cutting calories and exercising. David Meyre and Russell de Souza (HIE) published “A systematic review of genetic syndromes with obesity” in Obesity Reviews.
Outcomes associated with type 1 diabetes in young adults
Zubin Punthakee (Medicine) and colleagues published “Predictors of type 1 diabetes mellitus outcomes in young adults after transition from pediatric care” in the Journal of Diabetes.

Deborah Sloboda won an award from the YWCA Hamilton Women of Distinction
The Hamilton Spectator reported on numerous women from the McMaster community earning honours at the YWCA Hamilton Women of Distinction event. Among them was Deborah Sloboda (Biochemistry) who won the award in the Science, Technology and Trades.
