AMP-activated protein kinase: the current landscape for drug development
A recent review paper by Gregory Steinberg (Co-Director, Centre for Metabolism, Obesity and Diabetes Research) and colleague David Carling (Cellular Stress Group, Medical Research Council London Institute of Medical Sciences, Imperial College, London, UK) discusses the current landscape for drug development and the role of AMP-activated protein kinase. The paper, published in Nature Reviews: Drug Discoveries highlights the activation of AMP kinase and it’s link to the health benefits of exercise and caloric restriction, including strategies to mimic the beneficial effects pharmacologically, which could treat metabolic diseases, cancer, neuromuscular disease and ageing.
